Founder Shawn Stüssy was a surfer in Laguna Beach in the late 80s when he began to screen t-shirts and shorts to sell along with his surfboards. His iconic graffiti style signature began to be seen around in the California surf scene and before long the cult surf and skate brand was setting up showrooms in New York and California and selling in selected stores, evolving to become the streetwear brand we know and love today. Growing organically from youth movements in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s from the California surf scene, Stüssy revolutionised the look and ideology of casualwear. Drawing on inspiration from his travels and underground subculture DJs, hip-hop and street artists, has ensured Stüssy remains relevant. The original streetwear brand producing good-quality street gear, and selling only in selected stores in limited quantities, is still keeping it fresh.
